Design Tips for Low-Volume CNC Machining Production Runs

Low-volume CNC machining is an effective solution for businesses that need a limited number of custom-manufactured parts. Depending on part complexity, it delivers cost-effective fabrication without the expense of dedicated hard tooling. For short runs, the real cost drivers are the design choices made before the spindle ever turns: tooling, machining time, setups, and material. At Dongguan Shiye Hardware Technology Co., Ltd., we machine low-volume and one-off custom parts with a minimum order quantity of just 1 piece, tolerances down to ±0.01 mm, and a 7–14 day lead time.

Use Standardized, Simple Designs

Keeping designs as basic and uncomplicated as possible is the single most effective way to minimize cost. Complex geometry requires additional tooling and machining time, and it invites quality concerns.

  • Standard hole sizes – non-standard holes require supplemental machining time and increase cost.
  • Specify tolerances only when necessary – where no tolerance is listed, parts are machined to a standard of ±0.125 mm or better.
  • Use radii instead of vertical edges – milling tools are cylindrical, so sharp internal corners are difficult to achieve. Use one consistent radius, make corners at least one-third of the cavity depth, and keep the cavity floor radius small.
  • Limit cavity depth – keep cavity depth within four times its length.
  • Limit thread length – threads longer than 1.5* the hole diameter add no strength; design them to a maximum of 3* the hole diameter.
  • Minimize setups – one setup is ideal.
  • Avoid multiple surface finishes – choose the standard finish unless a second is truly required.

Avoid Thin Walls, Tall Walls, and Narrow Pockets

Machining thin or tall walls, deep cavities, and narrow pockets is time-consuming and error-prone. The slightest variation in material quality can lead to part damage and extra scrap cost. Thick, solid parts machine faster, waste less material, and are more stable.

  • Metal parts: develop walls 0.8 mm or thicker.
  • Plastic parts: maintain a minimum wall thickness of 1.5 mm or greater.

Avoid Unnecessary Text and Finishing Processes

Serial numbers, descriptions, and customer logos can be helpful, but every engraved character consumes valuable machining time and raises cost. Where possible:

  • Remove all text and lettering.
  • Choose engraved over embossed lettering if lettering is required.
  • Use a minimum size-20 sans-serif font (for example Arial or Verdana).

Alternative processes — laser engraving, embossing, silk screen, and painting — often produce the same effect faster and at lower cost.

Choose the Proper Material

Standardize material size and selection. Harder materials such as titanium are more challenging to machine, which lengthens cycle time and adds cost. Softer, less expensive materials such as aluminum, steel, and brass are easier to manufacture and readily available, which shortens lead time and reduces inventory carrying cost. Choose the least expensive material that still meets the specification.

Additive Manufacturing as an Alternative

For prototypes and low-to-medium volumes with moderate tolerance requirements, additive manufacturing (3D printing) can be a faster alternative to traditional CNC. Parts are created layer by layer rather than cut from solid stock, which greatly reduces material waste and setup effort.

Work with an Experienced Manufacturing Partner

A specialized contract manufacturer can take on difficult or low-volume work without disrupting your own production floor. The right partner analyzes your design, delivers a quotation, keeps you updated, inspects quality, supplies certifications, and ships to your customer.

AdvantageWhat It Delivers
SpeedQuality prototyping and on-demand production reduce lead times and time to market without massive internal changeovers.
CostFluctuating orders and equipment changeovers are outsourced, cutting inventory carrying cost and risk.
QualityExperienced manufacturing experts deliver lower defect rates and consistent results.

Shiye is an ISO 9001:2015 certified CNC machining manufacturer in Dongguan, China, supporting STEP, IGES, STL, and DXF files. Send us your drawings for a fast, no-obligation quotation and design-for-manufacturability feedback on your next low-volume run.
