Small Gas-Engine Exhaust Flanges: CNC Port Alignment, Bolt-Circle Accuracy and Sealing-Face Requirements

2026-10-29
Latest company news about Small Gas-Engine Exhaust Flanges: CNC Port Alignment, Bolt-Circle Accuracy and Sealing-Face Requirements

A small gasoline engine exhaust flange connects the cylinder head to the exhaust pipe or manifold.

It looks like a simple metal plate, but three details matter: the exhaust port must line up, the bolt holes must fit, and the gasket surface must seal properly.

These requirements apply to custom exhaust flanges used in generators, utility engines, and other small gasoline-powered equipment.

1. What Features Matter on a Small-Engine Exhaust Flange?
Feature Why It Matters
Exhaust port Must match the engine's exhaust opening
Bolt holes Must align with the mounting studs or fasteners
Bolt circle or spacing Controls the mounting pattern
Sealing face Provides contact for the exhaust gasket
Flange thickness Affects rigidity, fit, and resistance to distortion

CNC milling is useful for machining the port opening, bolt holes, outside profile, and gasket mating surface.

2. How Do You Specify Port Alignment and Bolt-Circle Accuracy?

The exhaust port should align with the engine's outlet and the gasket opening.

A port that is incorrectly positioned can create an unwanted step, interfere with the gasket, or make assembly difficult.

For a common two-bolt exhaust flange, specify the distance between the two bolt-hole centers and the position of the exhaust port relative to those holes.

For a flange with a circular hole pattern, define the pitch circle diameter (PCD), hole count, and angular spacing.

Also specify the hole diameters and their required positional tolerances.

For example, Mike, an engineer developing a replacement flange for a small generator engine, might have the correct port size but find that the two mounting holes don't match the engine studs.

The problem isn't the port diameter. It's the bolt-hole spacing or the location of the holes relative to the port.

3. What Makes a Good Exhaust Flange Sealing Face?

The sealing face must provide suitable contact for the exhaust gasket.

Three details are important:

Flatness: Excessive distortion can create uneven gasket compression.

Surface finish: Scratches or unsuitable machining marks may affect sealing.

Thermal stability: Heating and cooling cycles can cause expansion and distortion.

Flanges welded to exhaust tubes may also distort during fabrication. If flatness is critical, the manufacturing plan should consider whether the sealing face needs finishing or inspection after welding.

There is no single roughness value suitable for every exhaust gasket. The required finish depends on the gasket material, joint design, and engine manufacturer's specifications.

Our CNC Surface Roughness Ra vs Rz Guide explains how surface texture is measured.

4. Which Material Should You Choose?

Small-engine exhaust flanges are commonly made from carbon steel or suitable stainless steel grades.

Carbon steel: Often used for economical exhaust flanges, but requires consideration of corrosion and high-temperature service.

Stainless steel: Grades such as 304 may be suitable for selected exhaust applications where corrosion resistance and compatibility with the exhaust assembly are important.

Material selection should account for operating temperature, thermal cycling, welding requirements, and the mating exhaust components.

Aluminum is generally not the first choice for a flange directly exposed to hot engine exhaust gases.

Conclusion

A properly specified small gas-engine exhaust flange needs accurate port alignment, a correctly defined bolt-hole pattern, and a suitable gasket sealing surface.

CNC machining can control these features, but the drawing should clearly identify the critical dimensions and material requirements.
