Choosing the right aluminum alloy can make or break a machined part’s cost, lead time and in-field performance. In contract manufacturing — where volumes, designs and end uses vary widely — the “best” aluminum depends on what you are optimizing for: machinability, strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, cosmetics, weldability or regulatory compliance. This guide covers the aluminum alloys we machine most often in precision CNC turning and milling, with practical tips to help engineers write clearer prints and make smarter tradeoffs.

Series and Temper: How to Read an Aluminum Grade

  • Series (2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx, etc.) identifies the primary alloying element and general behavior — strength, corrosion resistance and weldability.
  • Temper (e.g., T6, T651, T3, H32) describes the metallurgical condition of the stock as supplied by the aluminum mill. It is set at the mill before machining — it is not something a CNC machine shop produces — and it directly affects strength, stability and machinability.
  • Call out both on your print. “6061” is incomplete; “6061-T6” or “6061-T651 plate” avoids surprises in strength and flatness.
  • Our scope. Shiye is a purely subtractive CNC machining shop (milling, turning, drilling and multi-axis). We machine aluminum from wrought bar, plate and extrusion stock in the mill condition you specify. We do not offer heat treatment or tempering, and we do not make castings or molded parts — so please specify a material grade and mill temper that already meets your mechanical requirements.

The Aluminum Alloys You Will Pick 80% of the Time

6061-T6 / T651 — The all-around workhorse

Why choose it: An excellent balance of machinability, strength, corrosion resistance and cost, readily available in bar, plate and extrusion. Best for: general-purpose housings, brackets, fixtures, manifolds and anodized parts. Machining notes: stable and predictable; T651 plate (supplied in a stress-relieved condition by the mill) resists movement after heavy material removal, and it takes an attractive clear or black anodize.

7075-T6 / T651 — High strength, aerospace favourite

Why choose it: A very high strength-to-weight ratio with good fatigue resistance. Best for: structural components, high-load parts and thin but stiff sections. Machining notes: machines crisply with short chips and an excellent surface finish. Corrosion resistance is lower than 6xxx and it is not ideal for welding; clear anodize tends to gray or bronze, so manage cosmetic expectations or specify a dye.

2024-T3 / T351 — Fatigue strength and toughness

Why choose it: Strong with excellent fatigue properties; a classic aerospace grade. Best for: moving and rotating parts, load-bearing structures. Machining notes: machines well but is copper-rich, so corrosion resistance is modest; it is usually alodined, primed or painted rather than decoratively anodized. Poor weldability.

6082-T6 — A strong, 6061-like alternative (common in the EU)

Why choose it: Slightly higher strength than 6061 and widely available internationally. Best for: general machining where 6082 is the regional standard. Machining notes: behaves much like 6061 with a good anodize response.

5052-H32 — Formability and corrosion resistance

Why choose it: Great corrosion resistance for parts cut from sheet and plate, especially marine and outdoor use. Best for: enclosures, panels, brackets and marine hardware. Machining notes: softer and somewhat gummy in milling and turning compared with 6xxx/7xxx; anodizes nicely and welds excellently.

5083 — Marine and cryogenic toughness

Why choose it: Top-tier corrosion resistance and toughness, particularly in saltwater. Best for: marine, pressure-vessel and cryogenic components. Machining notes: feels similar to 5052 at the spindle; excellent weldability. Often specified where 6xxx will not survive the environment.

Free-Machining Aluminum for High-Volume Turning

2011 (and 2007 in the EU) — The automatic-screw favourite

Why choose it: Outstanding machinability, short chips and high throughput on CNC lathes. Best for: high-volume turned parts with threads, small diameters and tight cycle times. Compliance note: contains lead for machinability and is often not RoHS compliant; poor for welding and decorative anodize. Confirm regulatory requirements early.

6020 — The lead-free free-machining alternative

Why choose it: Free-machining behavior without lead. Best for: turned parts where RoHS/REACH compliance matters. Machining notes: very good chip control and tool life, with a better finishing and compliance story than 2011.

DFM Tips: Turn Alloy Choice into Lower Cost

  • Specify temper and product form. “6061-T651 plate” or “6061-T6 extruded bar” — plate versus bar changes stability and flatness.
  • Call out the finish realistically. Prefer 6061, 6082 or 5052 for clear/black anodize; expect 7075 to tint under clear anodize, where black dye improves uniformity; avoid decorative anodize on 2024 and free-machining grades.
  • Tolerance stack-up beats material choice. For tight GD&T (true position, flatness, profile), specify T651 plate, which arrives stress-relieved from the mill.
  • Thin walls and small threads. High-strength 7075/2024 help stiffness in thin sections — but plan corrosion protection; for tiny threaded features, free-machining grades shorten cycle time and reduce burrs.
  • Welding? Say so early. Favour 5xxx or 6xxx for weldments; avoid 2xxx/7xxx.
  • Regulatory compliance. If the product must be RoHS/REACH compliant, avoid leaded free-machining 2011 or explicitly allow a compliant alternative such as 6020.
